Planting the seeds for grass-roots democracy

In Appreciation

The campaign of 2006 is now over.

I would like to thank the 51,833 voters who took the effort to choose me as their representative. I would have been proud to serve as your voice in Washington D.C..

I would like to extend my greatest respect to all of the people running on the Democratic ticket this year. I have never known a better slate of candidates and feel incredibly honored to be included in your company.

Congratulations to all of the wonderful judges we now have in Dallas county. This is a well deserved victory for some very hard-working folks.

Speaking of hard-working folks, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Mid-Cities Democrats and CGS Democratic clubs. Mark my words, they will change Tarrant County to blue in the near future!

It's Your Time

Here is the text of the presentation I gave on WFAA's segment "It's Your Time":

The most frequent question I am asked is: Why are you running for Congress? There are many issues and positions I can speak about, but the simplest answer is my primary motivation. I am not represented by my government. In the last six years, I have watched the national debt climb to almost 10 trillion dollars, our country started a war of choice, investigation committees shut down to keep testimony out of the record, witnessed the dismantling of Habeas Corpus, a legal precedent that reaches back to the Magna Carta, seen legislation written by lobbyists and special interests that was adopted and rubberstamped through a Congress which has only been in session less than 100 days this year, a culture of corruption with a major scandal every month and no oversight on ... anything ... All of this done in the name of the American people. This is the reality of one party rule. I want my country back as I don't believe in the notion that 51 percent is a mandate.

Congress needs the voices of working Americans and not professional politicians. We don’t have a bad government. It’s just being run badly. I am a believer in the separation of powers and the system of checks and balances. There are issues and concerns that regular working people need addressed. I work for a living, have concerns about retirement, health care, education and the rising cost of college, higher energy bills and lower wages. My mother is on Social Security which needs to be protected and not privatized. I would like to find out if there was war profiteering in Iraq and prosecute any company defrauding the taxpayers. And we need to end the cycle of government corruption through a strong campaign finance reform. Lobbyists should not have more representation than citizens. Congress needs to get their priorities back to working on education, health care, restoring Veteran's benefits, define a 21st century energy policy, jobs and issues that the American people want their government to deal with. We need a special focus on the environment because we only have one and it belongs to all of us. Clean Water will be the crisis of the near future.

Bush signs U.S.-Mexico border fence bill

Of the $1.2 billion to be spent, not a single dollar will go to feeding, clothing, educating or healing of a single individual. This will become a very expensive monument to fear and arrogance.

Another letter from a supporter

This is a long distance email for support:

Hi, Gary,

Just want you to know that I am one of your constituents living in Melbourne
(Victoria) Australia. I always go to the web to help me make my choices and
I have done that with you. I'm happy to report that you will get my
(absentee) vote today because of something you said in your speech about
immigration. You are so right on, Gary! The Republicans could well have
fixed the immigration problem long ago if it weren't such a hot button
campaign issue that they can use to yank the chains of conservatives. You

An email from a supporter

Sometimes you just need to let the people speak ...

Mr. Page,

As a resident of the 24th District, I just wanted to know that you have my support as you run against one of the lamest members of the current House of Representatives - Kenny Marchant.  I've visited your website, and I very much like your stance on issues - the real issues.

Rep. Marchant is an embarassment as our Representative.  He was brought to power by Tom Delay, is nothing but a rubber stamp to the Bush regime and deserves to leave.

Please get this message out to the voters of the 24th district.  Don't be afraid of the neocon machine. Please get your name and your message out there.   This election is a cruicial time in America.  I'm very afraid that the real truth will never makeit  to the voters.  Expose Marchant's stance on Iraq, torture, domestic spying, abortion, gay rights - the list goes on.

Center for war-related brain injuries faces budget cut

Makes me wonder what has a higher priority than our war veterans with injuries sustained in the line of duty.

USA Today - Center for war-related brain injuries faces budget cut

Congress appears ready to slash funding for the research and treatment of brain injuries caused by bomb blasts, an injury that military scientists describe as a signature wound of the Iraq war.

House and Senate versions of the 2007 Defense appropriation bill contain $7 million for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center — half of what the center received last fiscal year.
